Hi, my name is Deborah McKean and I am the service Coordinator for the South Ayrshire Carers Centre.
I originally joined Unity around 10 years ago. Thanks to the support and encouragement from the organisation I have worked my way up from being a volunteer with the North Ayrshire Carers Centre, to a part time Young Carers worker, progressing to a full time Young Carers worker and then promoted to become the service Coordinator. I feel that this shows not only the great opportunities Unity can provide, but also their commitment to ensuring that their staff members are achieving their potential. This has had a hugely massive positive effect in all areas of my life – I will never be able to thank them enough for that.
At Unity, I have become very much a believer in “Every day is a school day” – I’m pretty sure my team are fed up hearing me say it, but hey ho (!), every day we are progressing and learning new things.
Our role as a service is to provide support to unpaid carers from the age of 8+ whose life is adversely affected due to the ongoing responsibilities of caring for a loved one.
The team offer a large range of support to carers such as filling forms, respite, therapies, support groups, one to one support… even things as simple as a friendly welcome and chat, to name but a few.
Our door is always open and there is always someone at the other end of the phone, so if you feel you or anyone you know would benefit from our support please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Our staff are fabulous and are all very passionate about the work we do. This to me is wonderful, as they are very much a TEAM.
